1 – Sleeping on your face
“Gravity acts when we sleep on our face,” explained Dr. Patel. The immediate effects of this habit (dark circles and puffy eyes are caused by the force of gravity pulling the fluids from the face down. With time, sleeping face down promotes facial sagging and the loss of collagen.
If you want to slow down aging, do not sleep on your face. Instead, lie on your back to lessen the effect of gravity on your face.
2 – Do not wash your face
Washing your face before bed is essential to remove dirt and sweat that accumulate during the day.
“If you exercise and you sweat, your pores are clogged,” explained Dr. Patel. “If you have oily skin, your face will look even more greasy and oily”. Patel recommends using a cleanser scrub to wash the face and open the pores so that the skin can regenerate itself during the night.
3 – Using too many facial products
If you’re using a ton of products for facial care and you’re not sure of how to use each product, you may be actually carrying out a damaging habit for your skin.
“Products that contain retinol, for example, are used to prevent wrinkles. But when mixed with benzoyl peroxide to combat acne, it can dry out the skin and increase the irritation of the skin”, said Dr. Patel. When the skin is dry and irritated, reddened, and inflamed. 4 – Not drinking enough water
Staying well hydrated is very important for the skin. “When you’re dehydrated, the skin loses turgor and elasticity“. With time, the constant dehydration can cause the ultimate loss of the elasticity of the skin, which means that it can never recover.
Dr. Patel recommended that you take at least six glasses of water a day to keep your skin properly hydrated.
