When looking at yourself in the mirror, you can compare how your body changes over time. However, when you have an identical twin it is much easier to notice the differences and changes. Weight gain can be due to a lack of self-control or hormonal factors. However, in twins, it is difficult to blame those things.
Superficially it is easy to say we get fat because we eat too much and do not practice sport or exercise. However, no one takes into account the differences that may arise between eating fat or sugar. Twins Alexander and Chris Van Tulleken, two doctors, 36 years old, decided to conduct an experiment to find out what is more harmful to our body if fats or sugars.
Each one proposed a different diet for a month. Alexander took a low carbohydrates diet, basically without sugar, and Chris followed a very low-fat diet. They could eat all they wanted except prohibited foods.
The exercises and the lifestyle of both were similar, therefore, any changes that the body sustained during the experiment could be based on the diet. Alexander was not hungry but felt slow and tired and could not breathe well on his diet. On the contrary, Chris never felt full so spent the day eating.
Alexander stated that they had both lost weight with these diets but he lost more than Chris. However, it cost him more work to do sport.
“Our experiment showed that you can lose a lot of weight, like I did, in a diet low in carbohydrates, but that is not necessarily good. You can also lose weight with a low-fat diet, but long-term, consumption is not regulated of sugar may also have negative consequences for health,” says Alexander.
After the experiment, and some research they determined that the true cause of weight gain and obesity is not the sugar or the fat, but the combination of both.
So, if you want to lose weight, try to avoid processed foods that are made with sugar and fat. These foods can affect the brain very differently than natural food and that is why we are not able to resist eating them. Do not remove natural sugars and fats from your diet, but try to limit consumption of processed foods.
