Have you ever thought to get your car buried in your garden?
Chiquinho Scarpa is a country Brazilian millionaire which was quite common to come on the front pages of the newspapers, but not exactly for his business, but for his eccentricities.
His last extravagance shot token was, after stating that his visit to Egypt made him realize that it was necessary to do burial of his $ 450,000 Bentley if he wanted to enjoy it in the hereafter.
Despite the thousands of people who put the cry in heaven, stating that he should donate the car to charity before making such a waste decision, Scarpa went ahead with his idea and even published several photos that appeared next to his Bentley and a trench prepared for the ceremony.
The wealthy man continued sharing his plans of burial throughout the week accompanying the images published with texts like: “I Decided to do the same thing as the Pharaohs: this week I’m gonna bury my favorite car in my garden”.
The day of the burial, Scarpa invited the media so that everyone could witness the last good-bye to his Bentley, but once the car was about to be buried, the man stopped the whole ceremony.
Chiquinho had achieved his goal to attract the attention of millions of people. He then gave a speech that revealed the true reason why he had planned the whole charade, going instantly from villain to hero:
“People have condemned me because I try to bury a valuable vehicle. However, they forget that the majority of people bury something much more valuable than my car. People bury hearts, livers, lungs, eyes, and kidneys. It is absurd.”
“There are a lot of people waiting for a transplant and yet every day we waste thousands of healthy organs that could save lives. That is the biggest waste in the world. My Bentley is worthless in comparison with the bodies that can give life to others. There is No wealth more valuable than a human organ because there is nothing more valuable than life.”
“ I Officially Announce this week that I have become an organ donor. I am an organ donor, what about you?”
Instead of burying his car, the billionaire signed over all his nation a powerful message about organ donation.
In reality, it was an ingenious awareness campaign, devised by agency Leo Burnett on the occasion of the National Week of Organ Donation. The collaboration of Chiquinho Scarpa allowed something historic because never before have they got so much coverage in the media to promote donation. Simply brilliant…!
It is true that people have the right to do whatever they want with their body, but as a wondered Scarpa, why keep the bodies from being killed in place of donating them to a good cause?
The monetary amount of the car was a great Example of rest pales in comparison to the human lives that could be saved if each person was an organ donor.
