There are many legends and stories of people who woke up in time before being buried, however, not all of them are proven, or have real evidence. We show you the real stories of people that revived when they were being or had already been buried under the ground.
Stories of people who resurrected from the grave
1 – Essie Dunbar
In 1915, a 32-year-old woman named Essie Dunbar was declared dead by epilepsy. Her body was placed in a coffin and scheduled for burial the next morning. When the coffin was already in the hollow of the cemetery, her sister arrived from a trip and demanded to see her to say goodbye for the last time.
When she went up to the coffin and opened it up to see her, it was then when the deceased arose and greeted her sister. Years later, her friends were still thinking that she was a zombie that had come to life.
2 – Matthew Wall
Matthew Wall, was preparing to marry when he died. While transporting his body in a coffin to the cemetery the bearers stumbled and the coffin fell to the ground.
The blow woke up Wall and he began hitting the casket for them to let him out. He lived 24 more years, married and had two children.
3 – Mrs. Blunden
This woman had the bad luck of being declared dead and waking up in her coffin twice. The first in July of 1674, when she became ill and supposedly died. Her body was exhumed when a few children claimed to hear noises coming from the tomb.
She had woken up as there were signs of scratches on the coffin, but she was still lifeless, so they returned to the burial ground. The body was exhumed for a second time a few days later and she had new wounds and marks of attempted escape.
4 – Maggie Dickson
In September 1721, Maggie Dickson separated from her husband and began an affair with the son of the owner of the hotel in which she worked. She became pregnant and carried it in secret. The child was born dead so they dumped the corpse in the river in Edinburgh.
The body was found and she was condemned to the gallows. When they brought her body to the cemetery, she woke up in the coffin. They decided to forgive her crim, because the resurrection must be the work of God.
5 – Eleanor Markham
In 1894, Eleanor Markham was declared dead in New York. Two days later, her body was placed in a coffin to be carried to the cemetery. She woke up before she was to be buried and explained that she had been conscious while her body was being prepared for burial.
6 – Octavia Hatcher
She was declared deceased in 1891 after a long time in a coma, a product of depression. It was then when several people in the city woke up from a coma because of an insect bite.
Her husband began to think that may she had been buried alive and wanted to retrieve her body. They discovered that she had tried to escape from her coffin, but had not been able to.
7 – Unknown Girl
In 1850, an anonymous girl passed away in South Carolina of diphtheria. Her body was buried quickly to prevent the disease from spreading. Years later, the mausoleum in which she was interred was was open and it was discovered that the skeleton of the girl was behind the door and the door had scratch marks.
8 – Madame Bobin
In the year 1901, Madame Bobin died because of yellow fever after a trip to Senegal. A nurse suggested that perhaps she was not dead because her abdomen was still moving, but she was still buried. They exhumed the body and found that she had given birth inside of the coffin.
9 – Only three years old
In 1913, when he was to be buried, a boy of three years sat down in his little coffin and looked around. His grandmother died of fright instantly, while the boy turned and fainted in the inside of the coffin. He was declared again dead.
10 – Unknown French
In 1889, there was a record of a French policeman who was almost buried alive. After much drinking, the police went into a trance, which led to the belief that he had died. He woke up just after he was placed in his tomb, so they were able to get him out in time.
