It is assumed that holidays should be a time in which you can relax and forget the stress of everyday life. Unfortunately, in certain instances, a desired vacation can become a horrible nightmare.
There is a multitude of stories about teens who have gone away and never returned, or couples who after planning a vacation never return to their homes.
In some of these cases, there were no clues about the disappearance, or where tests were directly manipulated by the local authorities. What happened to these people?
Here are 10 disappearances that still remain a mystery:
1 – Natalee Holloway
In 2005, during a high school graduation trip to Aruba, Holloway (18) disappeared after spending the night partying with her friends. The last time she was seen was in the company of three men.
The main suspect was Joran Van der Sloot, one of the men who were in the bar that night and the son of an important politician. It is believed that his father covered up the crime to protect his son and, in the end, the police never had enough evidence to charge him for the murder of Holloway.
2 – Susan Jacques
Susan Jacques was another high school student who went on holiday with her friends. Near the end of her trip, Jacques decided to leave the hotel to take a walk on the beach completely alone. Three days later, Jacques was found floating in a canal 56 miles from the hotel.
At that moment, her body was so decomposed that they could not even determine how she died. No one knows what happened to the girl or who murdered her. No evidence was found and there were never any suspects.
3 – Madeleine McCann
The disappearance of Madeleine McCann was in the news in 2007, and since then her parents still don’t know what happened to their daughter. Madeleine was only 3 years old when she was pulled out of her hotel room while her family was on vacation in Portugal.
One night, her parents went out to dinner while she and her brothers stayed in the hotel. When they returned to their room, Madeleine was no longer there. It’s been more than ten years and the case still remains open and unresolved. Many people criticized the parents for leaving the children alone and even accused them of being involved in her disappearance.
4 – Kim Vaccaro and Lisa Eisman
In 1985, Kim Vaccaro and Lisa Eisman decided to hitchhike up to Fort Lauderdale for a vacation to meet up with their friends. Unfortunately, they never succeeded. The two university students did not tell their parents that they were planning to hitchhike and only took a few kitchen knives as protection.
They were picked up by a truck driver who was never identified and thus came to Maryland, from where Lisa had sent a postcard to her boyfriend. Their bodies were found life-less four days later. They had been so beaten that they were almost unrecognizable when found. More than thirty years later, the case is not yet resolved.
5 – Sister Eileen Christie
Sister Eileen Christie was 72 years old when she decided to go on holiday to Austria. Left New York in 2016, and, at all times remained in contact with her nephew by e-mail.
Her nephew told authorities that the last time he had news of his aunt was when she was recorded in a hostel in Hallstatt, Austria. The authorities never found any clue whatsoever about her possible whereabouts. The only thing that was missing from her room was a bathing suit, as a result, they considered that she had drowned while she was swimming.
Shortly after, this idea was dismissed due to the fact that Eileen was a very good swimmer. The police determined that she had to have been kidnapped. No one can understand why anyone would harm a nun of her age. There have never been any suspects.
6 – Katka Jose
Katka Jose was a student of engineering who wanted to go on vacation with his friends. Rented a house on the beach and, one night, almost at the end of the trip, Katka came out only to make a turn. After his disappearance, police found his mobile phone, wallet, and clothes in the trash behind the house.
The thought was that he was on drugs and drowned in the ocean. His friends mentioned that he had talked about suicide on the trip, his family, however, refused to believe that it’s suicide considering that he was a superb student with a relatively good life. The strangest thing about this story is that his friends were in the house a day after Katka, then they left and did not help in the least in the search for their friend.
7 – John Halford
John Halford decided to go to Egypt on a cruise on his own. He sported a lot during the trip and often sent messages to his wife about his adventures.
The night before the boat landing, he sent his wife a final text to let her know which flight would take him to the city. His wife planned to meet him at the airport, but the next day received a call saying that her husband had disappeared from the boat.
John was never found. The police suspect that he could have fallen out of the boat when no one was watching him.
8 – Amanda Waller
Amanda Waller was only 22 years old when she disappeared while on vacation on the Island of Curacao with her husband. There, the couple did snorkeling which is a popular activity on the paradise islands.
After snorkeling for 30 minutes, Amanda decided that she’d had enough and swam back to the shore. When her husband and his friends finished the activity, they were not able to find her. A search was performed on the island, but she was never found. It is not known if she drowned on the way to the coast as her body was never found in the water.
9 – Robyn Gardner
Six years after the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, another girl disappeared in Aruba. In 2011, Robyn Gardner told her boyfriend that she was going on a vacation with her family when in reality she was going to meet with a secret lover, Gary Giordano.
Gardner was not even interested in Giordano, but eventually agreed to go on vacation with him. Two days later, Giordano reported Gardner had disappeared. Supposedly, she went to a diving trip and never returned.
Giordano was declared a suspect and even spent four months in a prison in Aruba, but was finally released for lack of evidence. Although Giordano said that she could have been kidnapped for human trafficking, there is no evidence.
Her boyfriend claimed that Gardner never would get in the water above her waist because she hated to mess up her hair, and interestingly, Giordano also contracted an insurance policy for accidental death.
10 – Norman Lee
Norman Lee was known throughout the world as the artist from Marvel who worked on the comics of X-Men and Avengers. When he was on vacation in the Caribbean with his wife, they decided to go scuba diving. During the activity, Lee left the group and his wife and disappeared.
They conducted a search that lasted two days, but never found the artist. The police said the currents were too strong to be able to find the body if it was out there. The most widely accepted theory argues that Lee was probably absorbed by a stream. Strangely, the FBI decided to get involved in the search, suggesting that there could be something more within this story.
