The name “catnip” is derived from nepeta cataria, a herb closely related to mint. The plant, either fresh or dried for commercial purposes, has a chemical compound called nepetalactone that triggers a response from the receptors of pheromones in cats, in other words, causes them to lose the head when they smell.
