However, a 37 years old Indian man named Abhishek Prasad played the guitar while undergoing a brain surgery with his head open.

This was not for entertainment purposes, or to make the operation time shorter. This was because the doctors asked for this measure so that they would have information to determine whether they were fixing the problem or not.

Abhishek had a neurological disorder known as “Musician’s Dystonia” that causes the brain to send wrong signals to the muscles. This gets the patient to have involuntary and painful spasms.

This disease tends to arise when the same hand motions are repeated over and over again. Therefore, it tends to affect many musicians. In fact, 1-2% of professional musicians are affected by this disorder throughout their life.

Abhishek noticed something strange when the spasms he experienced in her fingers prevented him from playing properly. After a time he experienced even more restraint by his middle finger, ring and little finger of his left hand.

He went to the doctor because, after giving his hand a break from playing, he found no relief and the stiffness persisted. The initially doctors did not give him a definitive diagnosis. He said that it was muscle fatigue and he was prescribed antibiotics, analgesics, vitamins and physical therapy sessions.

Eventually, he was correctly diagnosed. It was “Musician’s Dystonia”. The doctors advised him that he needed brain surgery and that he would be fully conscious during the procedure. Although he was scared at the beginning, he trusted doctor Sharan Srinivasan enough and decided to go ahead with the procedure.

He had a lot of local anesthetic in the area for the doctors to be able to intervene. Abhishek remembers all the process but acknowledges that he did not feel any pain at all. But noted that it felt like “a generator was turned on during the operation.” Abhishek was instructed to play the guitar every time they “burned” a circuit in his brain throughout the surgery.

In the sixth burn, his fingers opened. The problem was solved. Abhishek felt good although he noticed some weakness in his hand and his left leg.

These live operations are a major breakthrough in the medical community in India, although musicians around the world have been subjected to this type of operation to treat similar conditions.
